When I say “sales” you might think of a leisure-suit-clad, sleazy middle-aged divorcee with a comb-over trying to convince you that 1978 was “a great year for the Pinto”… (or maybe that’s just me.)
Maybe you think of the “bro” version of a salesman. Tailored suit, open collar, slick haircut, leaving a vapor trail of aftershave everywhere he goes.
(Or do you just think of Dwight K. Schrute?)

Sales is about so much more than convincing – although it does require some suggestion, some nudging, even a little push sometimes.
Here’s the truth about sales: it’s all about finding the cross section between what you want, and what somebody else wants.
And that means that you are in sales.
Did you try to convince your middle school basketball coach to start you instead of playing off the bench? Sales.
Trying to get a little extra help at the customer service desk? Sales.
Asking your boss for a raise because you absolutely brought the heat last year with those automated spreadsheets? Sales.
Texting to ask her out again after the first date? Sales.
Getting your call advanced to a senior agent so that you can get the “new customer” rate on your high speed internet package–even though your contract has expired–and then sweet talking their supervisor into not only doing that but throwing in a new modem too for no extra charge? (Ok got a little too personal on that one…) Sales.
Find out where your desires meet their desires, and then make “the ask”. You’re in sales, all day, every day.
Being in sales isn’t as cringey as you might think. Reframe your mindset, and find common ground. Sell, baby, sell.
