The Goalposts Are Moving
What the curse of being human has to do with your mind and your money

The grass ain’t greener.
One time I was visiting a friend out in the country. Like cows, horses, veggie patch, stock tank country.
I recall sitting on the porch watching the neighbor’s cows try and push a 3-strand barbed wire fence over with their chest trying to get to the grass on the other side.
There was perfectly good grass on their side. But over the fence looked even better when they couldn’t reach it.
“Grass is Greener Syndrome” is simply explained as being “discontent with the way things are in your life.” It is both a blessing and a curse of being human.
Imagine if you’re playing football, and all you need to do is kick a field goal in order to gain total contentment. The goalposts are well within range, you’re comfortable in your ability, it’s a total lock.
But then the goalposts move back.
Ok, still good. You’re at the top end of your range, you know you can do it, but you’re starting to sweat it a little bit.
And then they move again.
This is what it’s like when you change your standards.
You get dissatisfied with the way things are, you are no longer content, and you desire more. The goalposts are farther, the kick you need to make is longer.
Not that ambition is a bad thing.
Ambition is what makes the world go ‘round. It’s what has built everything that you see around you.
But you need to check your heart every now and then on your financial journey and ask yourself…
Am I moving the goalposts on purpose?
