For the Love of Money
Ancient wisdom may not be exactly what you think it is...
Brought to you by:
“Money is the root of all evil.”
What is “one of the most misquoted scriptures of all time,” Alex?
It’s Easter week, so let’s go ahead an debunk that right now. The apostle Paul, in a letter to Timothy (his apprentice), wrote this:
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”
Just a few words make a big difference.
The love of money is the star of this statement, not money itself. Money is mentioned 113 times in the Bible. It must be pretty important to understand it’s affect on us.
TL;DR: love people, use money – not the other way around.
When we see stories of money being loved and people being used, it stirs up a righteous anger in even the least spiritually-minded people. The antenna for detecting injustice is hard wired in us all.
When corporate greed steamrolls through the Amazon jungle, clear-cutting land and displacing villages, we sense deep in our gut that it’s not right.
When we hear another scammer like Bernie Maydoff or Sam Bankman-Fried take people for tens of millions at a time, it’s hard to even believe that someone can be so incredibly selfish and harmful.
Back to Paul’s writings: the verse before the one about the root of evil is pretty telling: “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.”
It’s healthy to be ambitious. To chase freedom, to build businesses and work side hustles. It’s wise to save and invest. But on your journey be wary of the traps that money can set for you: luxury, status, vanity, many foolish and harmful desires.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.
Happy Easter to you and yours.
